Hamad International Airport, Qatar
UISEE's L4 Autonomous Shuttle Bus B13 and Autonomous Electric Tractor T30 helped Hamad International Airport maintain safe and stable unmanned airside transport and shuttle operations even in sandstorm conditions.
Background
Hamad International Airport is the recipient of the Skytrax World's Best Airport award. Qatar is committed to building a smart city, and the airport, as a key gateway to the country, must lead in technology innovation. With deep extensive expertise and proven in autonomous driving, UISEE formed strategic partnerships with QSTP (Qatar Science & Technology Park, a Qatar Foundation member), QAS (Qatar Airways QA Services), and Qatar's airport management and operations company to launch the autonomous driving pilot at Hamad International Airport's airside operations, pioneering autonomous driving applications at Middle Eastern airports. Addressing extreme climate conditions such as sandstorms, UISEE resolved the reliability challenges of autonomous driving technology in adverse environments through dedicated technical breakthroughs. Autonomous minibuses and Electric Tractors continue to operate safely and reliably in sandstorm conditions, providing robust support for the airport's emergency transport capabilities under extreme weather.
Challenges
Extreme Environmental Challenges: Qatar experiences approximately 6 sandstorms per year. Sandstorm conditions severely reduce visibility, disrupting conventional manual driving and making accurate road condition perception difficult, which critically impairs vehicle safety and poses enormous challenges for the airport's emergency transport under extreme weather.
Safety Management Pressure: High traffic volume and complex road conditions at the airport make manual driving susceptible to fatigue and errors, raising accident risks that endanger personnel safety and may cause flight delays, placing tremendous pressure on airport safety management.
Solution
Deployed: L4 Autonomous Shuttle Bus B13, L4 Autonomous Electric Tractor T30
Technology: U-Drive® Intelligent Driving System (Gen 5)
